If you want to be punk, than you have to be different from others. Punks have always tried to make themselves look distinct from the ways other act or dress, their spiky hair styles and colored hair make them look unique in the crowd of millions. So what exactly is this punk?
Let’s travel back in time to the middle of 1970’s when punk was gradually evolving in the United States and United Kingdom. Punk was born out of many artistic and philosophical movements that were raging in the 1970s and economic recession during those times. Some of the earliest forms of punk are protopunk and glam punk which were developed in cities like Detroit and Boston and New York City. The youth were very much dissatisfied with the life and the happenings going around and they came out hard expressing their anger and feelings of social alienation.
Punk music has more of short songs with anti-establishment lyrics that has fast music and stripped down instrumentation. Very similar to the indie rock, they prefer to record and distribute their music through informal and independent channels, instead of popular record companies.
Though, punk had undergone many changes throughout the 1980s, in the early 1990s punk saw a revival of itself. With the success of Nirvana, many record companies went back to punk as saw them as potential profits. Soon, more and more punk bands came up and started climbing the music charts and in no time they were all over the globe. Green Day and Smash became phenomenal success and they soon entered the mainstream music and had music videos over the TV. MTV and radio stations played a major role in making these bands a crossover success. Punk became more popular with more exposure on TV, punk started expressing their attitude through distinctive style of clothing that were endorse on TV, and anti-authoritarian ideologies.
Punk eventually moved into Hollywood after success on TV. Many punk-themed movies were released. These films have short footage of new video clips of band concerts. Few of the famous punk group like Ramones participated in the movies like Rock n Roll High School. Bands like Sex Pistols and Social Distortion were seen in movies like The Great Rock n Roll Swindle and Another State of Mind respectively. Documentaries like The Filth and the Fury were made that showed the rising of Sex Pistols. Movies like Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter, The Yo-Yo Gang and There Is No Authority But Yourself were made which were more of music documentaries that had the original footage of punk bands.
